Cpl. Frank B. Carpenter died while directing fire against enemy machine guns during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive.

The 307th Infantry Regiment moved against reformed enemy lines in order to help the “Lost Battalion” that was trapped behind them. Ordering his squad to take cover, Carpenter, as reported in his Distinguished Service Cross citation, “drew the sniper’s attention to himself by fire from his rifle. His gallant efforts prevented heavy casualties among his squad, but he himself was killed.”
