Sgt. Wellmon Whaley of White Castle, La., was a Sergeant in Company F, 4th Infantry Regiment. Severely wounded near Mont St. Pere in July 1918, he kept ahead of his patrol in the continue advance. He encountered an enemy patrol that opened fire on him. Though weak from loss of blood Whaley killed one of his opponenets and dispered the others. For these actions he received the Distinguished Service Cross. He later died on October 18, 1918.
